9 Ways To Become More Fluent At English

Updated: May 25, 2023

Try some or all of these ways to improve your fluency. The more you try, the better your result!

So you are trying to improve your English speaking fluency! what’s the best use of your time? Here are 9 strategies to help you! Before you try these… Remember to always have as much fun as possible when learning. This will help you remember what’s happened and will also make you want to learn more. - Mr Charles

  1. Watch English-language movies or TV shows with subtitles. You can then see the language being used. Read along out loud with the subtitles and try to copy the actors’ speaking style.

  2. Listen to English-language music and try to sing along. This is a fun way to practice your pronunciation and learn new vocabulary. Songs are often easy to remember and this gets you practicing your pronunciation.

  3. Find a language exchange partner online. This is someone who speaks the language you want to learn and wants to learn your native language. You can suggest a topic to discuss in both languages.

  4. Talk to yourself in English and record it. This may sound silly, but it’s a great way to practice speaking. Discuss what you are doing and what you can see. Listen to your recordings and think about how you can improve.

  1. Join an English-language conversation group. This is a group of people who want to practice speaking English together. You can find these groups online or in your local community.

  2. Practice with a native English teacher. This is the best way to improve your speaking skills. However, it will cost you. You can ask the teacher to give self study assignments to help you improve.

  3. Play language learning games. There are many fun and interactive games available online and on mobile devices that can help you practice speaking and learn new vocabulary.

  4. Read English-language books out loud. This is a great way to improve your pronunciation and fluency. You will be saying grammatically correct sentences (hopefully!) and will learn the typical patterns and structures of English.

  5. Make as many mistakes as possible. Yes really! You need to push yourself out of your comfort zone and take risks with your speaking. This will allow you to develop more quickly.

Learning a new language can be challenging, but with practice and persistence, you can become a confident English speaker. Remember to be patient with yourself and don’t be afraid to make mistakes and have fun.
